Why is my transfer pump losing suction?
The most common question we get regarding a fuel transfer pump not working is the loss of suction. Of course there could be multiple reasons for this but we find the best way to troubleshoot the problem remotely is process of elimination. We refer to our list of 20 questions and usually by question 3 or 4 we know the problem.
Fill Rite and GPI fuel transfer pumps are both very reliable pumps but have one thing in common. They both use telescopic suction tubes. The most common reason why the fuel doesn’t reach the nozzle when fueling is that the suction tube inside the tank has the ability to allow air to seep through the joint when the fuel level is below that point. A simple fix for this is using a straight piece of Schedule 40 PVC pipe to eliminate this problem. Take a look below at some questions to ask yourself when you come across a problem when pumping.
1. Is there Fuel in the Tank? ( Silly question but you can be surprised! )
2. Is the Strainer clogged or defective? ( Remove Cover Plate and clean Strainer )
3. Are you using a Telescopic Suction Tube? ( Remove and inspect or replace )
4. Is the Pipe Fittings loose and sucking air? ( Inspect and tighten fittings )
